Battling mesothelioma and the role of legal support in securing a future for his family
Background
Tony was diagnosed with mesothelioma in December 2019, at the age of 49. Prior to his diagnosis, Tony had no significant medical issues other than the occasional cold. He had worked at a well-known engines manufacturer for nearly 30 years, primarily in desktop support and later managing infrastructure and applications.
Tony’s health decline began in October 2019 when he started feeling unwell. While out walking his Labradoodle with his wife, Steph, he noticed shortness of breath, particularly when climbing hills. At first, Tony dismissed it, but as his symptoms worsened, he knew he had to consult his doctor.
A quick visit led to the discovery of fluid in his chest, which was initially treated with antibiotics. However, his condition did not improve and after further tests, doctors drained five litres of dark fluid from his lung.

Despite the drain, Tony’s symptoms continued to worsen, prompting a referral to Papworth Hospital for further investigation. It was there, after a biopsy, that Tony received the devastating news: he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer typically linked to asbestos exposure.
The diagnosis came as a shock to both Tony and his wife. Although Tony initially struggled to grasp the severity of mesothelioma, he quickly became concerned about the impact that it would have on his family, particularly his children. Tony felt angry with himself for not having life insurance and was initially consumed with worry about his family’s financial future.

Tony often reflects on the importance of not judging others, recognising that people are often facing challenges that are invisible to the outside world.
“You don’t really understand the full extent of how much this affects everyone around you, especially your family. The stress, the worry, the emotional toll, it all takes such a heavy toll on them.”
Tony credited his recovery to the dedicated medical team and the support that he has received from both his family and legal advisors.

Through his involvement with Mesothelioma UK, he participates in annual 100-mile cycling challenges, and regularly attends fundraising events and meetings.
