Independent charitable trust, The Burdett Trust for Nursing is donating a £10,000 grant to Mesothelioma UK, the national asbestos-related cancer charity. The funding will enable Mesothelioma UK to appoint a Project Lead that aims to establish an All Wales Mesothelioma Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) and support the delivery of clinical nurse specialist care to patients across Wales.
The Burdett Trust for Nursing is named after Sir Henry Burdett KCB, the founder of the Royal National Pension Fund for Nurses (RNPFN). The Trust makes grants in support of nurse-led projects, using its funds to empower nurses and make significant improvements to the patient care environment.
Mesothelioma is a type of lung cancer primarily caused by exposure to asbestos and affects approximately 2,700 people in the UK each year. Mesothelioma UK is a national charity providing help and advice to patients and families including a network of clinical nurse specialists based at NHS trusts around the country.
Shirley Banes, Chief Executive at the Burdett Trust said: “The Burdett Trust is proud to be able to support Mesothelioma UK with a grant of £10,000 towards providing an enhanced service for patients and families in Wales. The integrated work they do on the frontline alongside the NHS, via their specialist nurses is vital. Our Trust recognises the importance of providing grants to charities that carry out essential support services such as Mesothelioma UK.”
Lorraine Creech, Head of Nursing for Mesothelioma UK added: “We’re extremely grateful for the grant of £10,000 from The Burdett Trust. Grants like this are vital to us as we rely entirely on donations and fundraisers to fund the running of the charity. This funding will help us to establish a better provision of specialist support and expertise for patients in Wales where there is currently no multi-disciplinary team for mesothelioma. The project in Wales will help to us to achieve our aim of ensuring equitable access to first-class treatment and care for all patients in the UK.”
