A Rochdale woman who has been diagnosed with the asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma, is holding a fundraising day on 31 August 2024.
Michelle Spencer will be holding a day filled of fun to raise funds for the national charity, Mesothelioma UK. Michelle, along with her friends and family, will be hosting the event from 11am onwards at the old Mecca Bingo Hall in Smith Street. Rochdale, OL16 1YH.
Michelle was diagnosed with mesothelioma, aged 60. Following a successful civil claim against a previous employer, it was confirmed that Michelle was exposed to asbestos during her first ever job when aged 15, she joined the Arkwright Mill in her home town of Rochdale, where she was recruited as a telephonist and receptionist. There was blue lagging in the engine room at the mill which was present for 18 months.
At the event, there will be a variety of stalls, exciting activities for children, and plenty of entertainment including a bar, pool tables, darts and table tennis. People can indulge in delicious treats – coffee and cake for just £5, or savour a buffet, burger or hot dogs with chips for the kids, also priced at £5. The day will also feature a tombola, face painting and an auction offering a fantastic array of prizes.
Michelle said: “There is a tragic coincidence of getting exposed to asbestos in Rochdale, also home to Nellie Kershaw, who was the first published account of the disease now attributed to occupational asbestos exposure.
“After I was diagnosed, I now tell everybody about mesothelioma so that they all know about the dangers. I don’t want sympathy and am now always looking at how I can enjoy and extend my life. That’s why I want to help Mesothelioma UK to raise awareness of the disease and why we’re organising a fundraising event. It’s given me a focus.”
