Researchers looking for carers of armed forces mesothelioma patients to take part in new study

As part of the MiMES Military Mesothelioma Experience Study, Mesothelioma UK is funding a project which aims to investigate the psychological effects of mesothelioma from the carer’s perspective. Specifically, this study is looking at UK Armed Forces veterans and their carers/supporters.

A research team at the University of Sheffield is conducting the investigation and is looking for participants to take part in an interview to share their experiences.

Participant requirements:

  • Must be/have been the main unpaid carer/supporter for a UK military veteran diagnosed with mesothelioma
  • Must be 18 years old or over
  • The veteran patient is living, or died (from any cause) less than one year ago
  • Must have access to a computer/tablet/smart phone for the online interview

The aim of the study is to interview carers about their experience of the psychological effects of mesothelioma on themselves and on patients. For the first time it is the carer’s unique perspective being researched.

The information provided will give researchers a better insight into the health and support needs of this group of people so that current services and care can be improved.

Virginia Sherborne, Postgraduate Research Student, will conduct the interviews as a video conference via Google Meet.  Topics that will be discussed in the interview will include: the impact of diagnosis, emotional responses, coping strategies, mental health, negative and positive changes, relationships, information and support needs. The audio will be recorded and transcribed with all names and identifying data removed.

If you would like to find out more about taking part in this study, please call the Mesothelioma UK information line on 0800 169 2409.
