Northumbria Healthcare’s Study Sheds Light on Mesothelioma Patients’ Health and Lifestyle

A new research initiative by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, funded by Mesothelioma UK, has delved into the health and lifestyle of patients battling mesothelioma. The study, aptly named ‘Health and Lifestyle of Patients with Mesothelioma’ (HELP-MESO), aims to enhance patient care by focusing on appetite, diet, and physical activity.

Study Overview: Led by Dr. Lorelle Dismore, the research team embarked on a comprehensive investigation. They interviewed patients, informal caregivers, and healthcare professionals to gain insights into the challenges faced by mesothelioma patients. The findings have proven invaluable, providing a deeper understanding of how to support patients from both nutritional and physical activity perspectives.

Key Findings:

  1. Appetite Challenges:Mesothelioma patients often experience fluctuations in appetite due to the disease and its treatments. The study highlights the need for tailored nutritional support to address these issues effectively
  2. Activity Levels:The research sheds light on the impact of mesothelioma on patients’ physical activity levels. Some patients struggle with reduced mobility, emphasizing the importance of personalised exercise recommendations

Immediate Impact: The study has already raised awareness among healthcare professionals regarding appetite problems and nutritional requirements specific to mesothelioma patients. By disseminating this knowledge, Northumbria Healthcare aims to improve patient care in the short term.

Long-Term Goals: Looking ahead, the team aspires to design targeted interventions that address both nutritional needs and physical activity. These interventions could significantly enhance the quality of life for mesothelioma patients.

 Publication and Presentations:

  • The research team has published a paper on appetite in mesothelioma patients and their caregivers in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition
  • A separate paper, focusing on healthcare professionals’ experiences, is pending publication in the RCNi journal
  • The team has also presented their findings at conferences such as the British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) and the British Thoracic Society (BTS). Additionally, they participated in two Action Meso days, engaging with patients and stakeholders
