New Mesothelioma UK Clinical Nurse Specialist appointed to support asbestos-related cancer patients in Wales

Rebecca Weston-Thomas has been appointed as a Mesothelioma UK Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to provide care and support for mesothelioma (asbestos-related cancer) patients in Wales.

Rebecca will be based at the St Woolos Hospital in Newport and will share the new role with her existing lung cancer nurse position. She will work with other lung cancer nurses and Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs) across Wales to provide care and treatment for around 100 mesothelioma patients throughout the country.

Rebecca will also work alongside the Asbestos Awareness Support Cymru (AASC) group to extend help and support for patients of asbestos-related diseases in Wales.

Mesothelioma is a cancer related to exposure to asbestos and predominantly affects the lining of the lungs. The UK has the highest incidence of the disease in the world with around 2,700 people diagnosed each year.

Rebecca has been a lung cancer nurse at St Woolos Hospital for six years and prior to that, was working in acute respiratory medicine for 10 years.

Commenting on her new role, Rebecca said: “I’m excited to join Mesothelioma UK and be in this position to bring my lung cancer experience and expertise to support mesothelioma patients locally and nationally.”

Head of Nursing for Mesothelioma UK, Leah Taylor added: “We’re delighted to appoint Rebecca to this key position in Wales. Our previous Mesothelioma Clinical Nurse Specialist in Wales, Sarah Morgan, retired at the end of 2023, having made a significant and lasting contribution to the mesothelioma community in Wales. We’re sure that Rebecca will continue the great work that Sarah undertook with patients from across the country.”
