The European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) has published new clinical practice guidelines with major recommendations for managing patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma.
Key highlights in the guidelines which have been published in the Annals of Oncology, include descriptions of optimal diagnostic methods, pathological evaluation and staging.
The authors make recommendations on the role of surgery and macroscopic complete resection as part of multimodality therapy and they discuss optimal first-line, maintenance and salvage systemic
therapies and immune checkpoint inhibitors. The also cover the role of prophylactic, radical and palliative radiotherapy and optimal supportive care.
The paper has been prepared by a panel of oncologists led by Professor Sanjay Popat, Consultant Thoracic Medical Oncologist at the Royal Marsden Hospital and Professor of Thoracic Oncology at the Institute of Cancer Research.
