Farewell to Trustee, Helen Childs

Helen Childs, Trustee for Mesothelioma UK, is stepping down after over five years with the charity. Helen, who is a partner at law firm RWK Goodman and heads up the team of specialist Industrial Disease solicitors, joined the Mesothelioma UK Board after working in personal injury claims for many years.

Helen says, “For me, asbestos work is the most rewarding of all. I am so passionate about it – it really is the best thing to help secure compensation and bespoke medical treatment for anyone who had been diagnosed with this illness that is so earth shattering.”

Amazing on every level

Speaking of her work with Mesothelioma UK, Helen says that the charity has been ‘amazing on every level’.

“It gives something back, and everyone who works there is so inspirational. Not only do they go above and beyond to raise awareness, they drive the provision of clinical nurse specialists, which makes such a difference for the patients and makes their experiences so much more positive.”

Helen says that when she joined Mesothelioma UK, the charity was smaller, with fewer staff and specialised nurses.

“The pathway was different, fewer hospitals had significant experience of treating mesothelioma, and the charity decided it needed to work hard to raise awareness to try and ensure uniformity of treatment across the country. After a couple of years, it also reviewed its strategy and aims. It’s been such a privilege to watch it grow and it’s so impressive how influential it now is.”

Helen attributes much of her positive experience as a trustee to Liz Darlison, charity CEO. “Liz is so inspirational. Her passion is so clear – this is more than just a job for her. She raises awareness of the dangers of asbestos, what treatments are available and makes sure people know what they are entitled to in terms of treatment or financial compensation. Her MBE really validates how hard she works and is one of the reasons people trust Mesothelioma UK so much.”

Charity reaches new heights

Reflecting on her experience with Mesothelioma UK, Helen speaks of how she’s seen the charity reach new heights.

“Mesothelioma UK has had such a solid presence, it reinforces Leicestershire (where the charity’s headquarters are based) as a centre of excellence. Mesothelioma isn’t going away any time soon, and it still affects thousands of people every year, 25 years after all asbestos was banned. But the charity is doing outstanding campaigning work to ensure future generations aren’t exposed to asbestos and subsequently aren’t at the risk of developing any related diseases.

“It is also driving research, looking at new treatment options and rolling out a uniform standard of care nationwide. There have been huge advancements in treatments in the last 10 years and Mesothelioma UK is always ahead of the curve when it comes to making sure those diagnosed with asbestos related illnesses can access the best treatment and clinical trials.

“I cannot over-emphasise what a positive experience I’ve had and how privileged I’ve felt to have been part of the board. It’s given me greater insight into the medicine around asbestos related illnesses and into people’s experience of mesothelioma itself. I’d like to thank Liz, Nick Maskell (Chair of the Board of Trustees for Mesothelioma UK) and all my current and former board colleagues for all their support over the years. It’s been such a pleasure and I know that Mesothelioma UK will achieve incredible things in the future.”
