Andrea Bayles-Gungabissoon
Andrea's world fell apart in October 2008, after months of various tests her Dad was diagnosed with Mesothelioma. At the time of diagnosis she felt there was absolutley no hope and that her lovely Dad would be taken away from her without a fight. The diagnosis it's self is devastationg and we all felt crushed. After the initial shock she vowed to ttry to make a difference by raising funds and awareness of Mesothelioma through her Travel Agency called Travel Link by donating money for each of their bookings to a Mesothelioma Charity.... And to date they have raised £2,060.00 but do want to raise a whole lot more. her lovely Dad has responded to chemotherapy quite well and after 3 years but unfortuantely he was diagnosed with a different kind of lung cancer which another round of chemotherapy followed and again he is doing very well. Andrea supports four Mesothelioma Charities, J.H.M.R.F, Mick Knighton and Mesothelioma UK and Debbie Brewers soon to be new charity, Red Hot Meso Warriors. Andrea's inspiration is her wonderful Dad who is incredibly brave and also her fabulous friend Debbie Brewer who gave her hope when there was none and Andrea would like to make a difference in her own small way in hope that one day there will be a cure.
Travel Link specialise in organising weddings abroad but you can also book your holidays too and they pledge to donate a minimum of £5.00 for every booking made, each month Travel Link will choose one of the charities to be the benfactor and in the months of June and July the chosen charity for the Race for Life as the Red Hot Meso Warriors which will be taking place in London's Regents Park on the 14th July. The target was £600.00 and they raised £1,250.00. August they have chosen the Mesothelioma UK Charitable Trust and the charity will benefit from Travel Links Charity donations, however if you want to book before August and want your booking donation to go to our charity then all you have to do is request this at the time of booking. Andrea wants to raise £10k for the four charities and at this present time has raised a total of £2,290.00 click here to see their Meso fundraising thermometer!
Aidan Gibson
Aidan is collecting for the Charitable Trust because he says "we need to help and raise awareness". This is Aidan's story... "My father Steve, passed away in December 2011 having been diagnosed with mesothelioma the asbestos related cancer only two months before. He was only 60 yearsold, had not yet retird and still has many plans in his personal and work life, and much to live for. Dad was such an inspirational man to me. Calm, caring, funny and wonderful, he was an amazing Dad. After having worked in horticulture most of his life, he was happiest when he had his won kite shop in the 90's called Way-on-High. He was part of a kite formation team called The Air Heads. In 1998 he formed 'Start Business@ which helped hundreds pf [ep[;e tp set up their own businesses. As an award winning business advisor he first published the book 'Going Self-Employed' in 2008 which has just been updated.
In 2009, 2,321 people died due to mesothelioma in Great Britain - around 100 more than died due to road accidents in the same year, and rightly so there are campaigns to improve road safety and effort made to reduce these fatalities- reducing exposure to asbestos and deaths from mesothelioma should also be pursued. Apparently the Twin Towers in New York were full of asbestos and there are fears of an epidemic as more and more people are exposed to asbestos, whether from the Twin Towers or elsewhere decades ago people will develop this cancer. Mesothelioma can take decades maybe up to 60 years to develop. Many cases including my father's are diagnosed too late to effectively treat. he did not recieve any chemotherapy or radiotherapy. It is often aggresive with a poor prognosis." If you would like to support Aidan please click the link to his Just Giving page.
