It is possible to claim at least one Benefit from all 6 Steps
In Step 4 you either claim DLA (Care) or Attendance Allowance depending on your age. Constant Attendance Allowance and Exceptionally Severe Disablement Allowance can then be claimed later alongside a Claim for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit and then paid to top up DLA OR Attendance Allowance to the extra amounts shown in Step 4.
For example it may be possible for a person with Mesothelioma to claim the following Benefits following a diagnosis:
Step One
Incapacity Benefit £68.95pw (under pensionable age) or £87.75 (over pensionable age)
OR
Retirement Pension £58.50pw (spouse or adult dependent) or £97.65 (single person) more depending on number of National Insurance Contributions
PLUS
Step Two
Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit £145.80pw
PLUS
Step Three
Disability Living Allowance (Mobility Component) if under 65 £49.85 (Higher rate) or £18.95 (Lower rate)
PLUS
Step Four
Disability Living Allowance (Care) if under 65 £71.40
OR
Attendance Allowance if age 65 or over £71.40
OR
It may be possible to claim the following Benefits at any age instead of the above 2 Allowances
Constant Attendance Allowance £29.20 - £116.80 depending on rate that it is awarded
PLUS
Exceptionally Severe Disablement Allowance £59.45 (Basic rate)
PLUS
Step Five
Income Support if you are under age 60
OR
Pension Credit if you are age 60 and over
PLUS
Step Six
Housing Benefit if you are in rented accommodation
AND
Council Tax Benefit if you are in rented or owner-occupier accommodation.
